Our DDB Experience

In our experience, Bordeauxs are primarily quiet and relaxed – until they are aroused. Don’t be fooled by their bulk and large size. They can be surprisingly athletic and agile when necessary. This is not a dog suited for apartments. To stay fit, they need space and moderate daily exercise. But more than anything, they require a good deal of personal interaction. Our Bordeauxs have been extremely loyal and devoted, and counter to their fearsome appearance, have always displayed affection to our family, friends, and especially our children.

Puppies should be friendly and trusting, and with proper socialization, should become reserved and discriminating as they mature. As with all mastiffs (and dogs in general), socialization is an absolute requirement to avoid either aggression or shyness. Bordeauxs are often inclined to do things their own way, but they will respond to early, consistent training that includes firm leadership, cheerful praise, and plenty of pets, hugs, and rewards (i.e., food!).

While we love our Dogues and consider them to be part of our family, they are certainly not right for everyone.

If you WANT a dog who is…

  • Massive and powerful

  • Extremely loyal and devoted to family

  • Gentle with children and family members

  • Calm and serious (as an adult)

  • A first-class watch and guard dog

A Dogue de Bordeaux may be right for you.

If you DON'T WANT to deal with…

  • A huge dog who takes up a lot of space in your house and car

  • A heavy dog who wants to sit on your feet and lean against you

  • Destructiveness when bored or left alone too much

  • Aggression toward other animals or people if not socialized properly

  • A stubborn dog with a strong-willed mind of their own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge

A Dogue de Bordeaux may NOT be right for you.
